Explore three CAST Impact Fund case studies below from CAST Phase 1 (2019-2024) to discover more about the individual projects and their real-world impact:

Designing new intervention pathways to reduce water and energy use in high-use households
This case study outlines why it’s important to reduce water and how social science can help, the novelty of the Change Points Toolkit, and how the CAST impact fund helped to adapt the toolkit for remote use during COVID-19.

Developing a tool to accelerate climate action at the city scale | Co-production of an assessment toolkit to embed assessment of carbon and co-benefits in decision-making
Project date: July 2020 – January 2021
This case study outlines the co-production of the Carbon and Co-benefits Decision Support Tool by CAST researchers from the University of Manchester’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). The tool enables GMCA to assess the carbon impacts and co-benefits of proposed policies, services, or initiatives, integrating these evaluations into their governance processes to support their decarbonisation targets.

Connecting Chorlton Climate Action Partnership to strengthen climate action in cities
Project date: March 2021 – December 2022
This case study outlines the collaboration between CAST researchers from the University of Manchester and Our Streets Chorlton (OSC), a community-led initiative based in South Manchester which aims to reduce car use for short journeys. The partnership explored how grassroots movements can influence local travel decisions and identified strategies to overcome barriers to low-carbon travel choices.
