Dr Mary Sanford is a Research Fellow at the University of Bath, supported by a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship. The title of the grant is Agents of the Status Quo: How elite influencers impact the ecological transition.
Mary’s research interests lie at the intersection of social science, data science, and the political economy of climate change. She uses qualitative and quantitative methods to identify social and political levers to accelerate the equitable pathways to decarbonisation. She contributes to CAST Themes 1 and 2.
Previously she was a postdoctoral researcher and junior scientist at the RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) in Milan, Italy. At EIEE, she worked on the EU Horizon CAPABLE project, investigating public acceptability of climate policy, the role of political actors, and assessments of approaches to citizen engagement.
She completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford in 2023, funded by an ESRC Advanced Quantitative Methods studentship. In 2021-2022, she worked for the Science, Technology, and Innovation Directorate of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). She earned a MSc also from Oxford (2018) and a Bachelors from the University of Pennsylvania (2017).
