Pamela Buchan is an interdisciplinary marine scientist with a mixed academic and professional background in marine biology, marine governance, social science, science communication, and politics. She is a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter and, after many years within Geography, is currently in the European Centre for Environment and Human Health working on environmental evidence synthesis and environmental policy as part of the METIUS project.
Pamela’s research is focused on the human-ocean relationship and how it links with environmental responsibility via marine citizenship. As such, her work considers ocean place-based relationships and identities and citizen participation in governance systems across marine sectors, including marine renewable energy, fisheries, ports, and conservation. She is also an advocate for the use of social science and qualitative evidence in environmental policy and decision-making. She is an ACCESS Leadership College Fellow, Royal Geographical Society Fellow, and member of the Coastal and Marine Research Group committee.
